My School Board colleague Carrie Du Bois has been a strong advocate for a number of children’s causes in the community, and she has organized an event on Monday, June 1st for community members to be engaged in a conversation about foster children in our community.
The purpose of the meeting is to promote awareness and action around the issues of foster children, including what more that school communities can do to better help them. There are currently 800 children in San Mateo County who are wards of the Court and not living with their biological parents. These children are in all of our districts, and they may move in and out of our school communities. They are invisible (due to strict confidentiality), so you may not know about them. This is the sub-group with the worst educational outcomes yet we have little data to review. These are the children that are most likely to drop out of school, become homeless or incarcerated. Carrie has long been an adovcate that through a school board/PTA partnership, we can do more to help these kids.
I will be there along with hopefully around 50 School Board Members from the surrounding area. The event is open to all community members, and I encourage you to attend. Here are the details:
