Last night we reviewed the steps the Board and the administration will take in discussing and then deciding on budget cuts for the upcoming school year. There will be cuts regardless of whether or not Measure B passes — they will be extremely more severe if it does not pass.
There are a few statuatory deadlines that can not move:
- By June 30th, we must deliver a budget to the San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools
- By May 15th, we must deliver final layoff notices to teachers (in other words, we can rescind the earlier notices by this date)
- By July 12th and July 17th, we must deliver layoff notices to other classification of employees if we do not wish to pay them starting at the beginning the next school year (however, since the budget will be done on June 30th, these could be done before then)
So, here is the current plan (note that this may change as it progresses):
- April 23: Board Meeting to discuss budget priorities
- May 7: Board Meeting to review results of Measure B, review staff’s proposal for budget cuts, and vote on final action on certificated employees to be laid off
- May 14: Board discussion/action on budget cuts
- May 21: Board discussion/action on budget cuts
- May 28: Potentially the final board action on budget cuts
- June 11: Board meeting to review proposed budget from administration
- June 18: Board meeting to finalize and approve budget
I encourage each of you to attend as many of these meetings as you can to stay informed.
