About this site

I am currently a Governing Board Member of the San Carlos School District, elected November 2007 and again in November 2011. I created this site to keep in touch with folks who want to know more about what is happening in the District and what it's like to be a Trustee.

Please note that ANY OPINION EXPRESSED HERE IS PURELY PERSONAL AND DOES NOT NECESSARILY REFLECT OFFICIAL POSITIONS OR POLICY OF THE SAN CARLOS SCHOOL DISTRICT NOR THE OPINION OF ANY OF MY COLLEAGUES ON THE BOARD.

I encourage everyone to visit the District web site as well as attend School Board meetings.

Note that I reserve the right to edit, reject, or delete posts based on spelling, grammar, readability, or my judgment of what is appropriate discourse.

The Most Hopeful of Times?

Over the last few days, I attended the annual CSBA Annual Education Conference, which is the main event for school board members around the state. This year the event was in San Diego (but back in San Francisco for 2012). Like previous CSBA conferences, one of the more frustrating parts is not being [...]

Doing our Homework

At Thursday night’s board meeting, we had an extremely interesting and meaty discussion about homework throughout the district. I was very pleased with the discussion, as it was open, honest, important, complicated, and a perfect demonstration that issues are not often as black and white as they may seem.

The district has had a long-held [...]

The Most Important Unimportant Number

California parents, prospective parents, education professionals, and other caring citizens often wait anxiously for the one day each year that they found out how their school performed in the annual API (Academic Performance Index) reports. Today was that day. Once again, San Carlos schools performed exceptionally well (although due to a computer glitch, [...]

End of Year Update

Friends and Supporters,

As has been my custom, I am sending an end-of-the-year update to summarize the happenings in the San Carlos School District. It has been a remarkable year in so many ways (and you may have read my periodic blog updates), but I will try to summarize most of it here. On a personal [...]

Elbow Room

At last Thursday’s Board meeting, we had a very important and overdue discussion about our facilities planning. As any parent in the District knows, our schools are crowded! We will have over 3,200 students next year in a set of campuses that were designed to hold something closer to 2,600 students.

The [...]

Congrats to TL Music Program!

The Tierra Linda eighth grade band, jazz band, orchestra and the TL 6-8 grade chorus recently travled to Disneyland to compete in the Heritage Music Festival in Anaheim. This is annual trip where our students compete with about 2,000 kids from 30 different schools.

TL took home the biggest prize at the festival, called the [...]

Where Character Grows

I’ve had the opportunity to spend some time over the past few months with the San Carlos Children’s Theater. My son was in the middle school production in January of The Music Man, and my daughter is performing in the current production of Sherlock Holmes. (BTW, performances of Sherlock Holmes end this weekend [...]

More than just an Understanding

Over the last two evenings, both the Governance Council of the San Carlos Charter Learning Center (CLC) and the School Board of the San Carlos School District discussed the latest term sheet for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two entities. The School Board decided last night, based on feedback from the GC [...]

Org Changes at The District

Today the Superintendent announced a number of organizational changes among the leadership at three of our schools. I think this is a very positive step which will help move forward our District goals. Read his message below:

Report from CSBA Conference

The past few days I attended the annual California School Boards Association (CSBA) conference, which this year was conveniently held in San Francisco. I was also a speaker on a panel in one session regarding “engagement your community in your budget process.” I find the conference very valuable as it’s a chance to [...]
