About this site

I am currently a Governing Board Member of the San Carlos School District, elected November 2007 and again in November 2011. I created this site to keep in touch with folks who want to know more about what is happening in the District and what it's like to be a Trustee.

Please note that ANY OPINION EXPRESSED HERE IS PURELY PERSONAL AND DOES NOT NECESSARILY REFLECT OFFICIAL POSITIONS OR POLICY OF THE SAN CARLOS SCHOOL DISTRICT NOR THE OPINION OF ANY OF MY COLLEAGUES ON THE BOARD.

I encourage everyone to visit the District web site as well as attend School Board meetings.

Note that I reserve the right to edit, reject, or delete posts based on spelling, grammar, readability, or my judgment of what is appropriate discourse.

In Memory

I assume almost all San Carlans now know about the sudden passing of our Mayor, Omar Ahmad, last Tuesday. It was truly a tragic day on many fronts, and of course devastating for his family. Yesterday, the city held a public memorial service at Hiller Aviation Museum which attracted a very full house [...]

What’s it like to be on the school board?

Every two years, we have an election for school board in San Carlos. With five total members, we alternate voting on two seats and then three seats. 2011 is an election year where two seats (including mine) are up for election. Perhaps atypical from most politicians, we actually want to encourage more [...]

Perhaps There is a Path

I have written many times about the structural problems in California government, particularly the broken educational finance system. The problems are so fundamental that it’s hard to imagine that we’ll ever solve them, particularly in the charged political climate which seems to be the current norm. Although there was some hope last year [...]

Where Character Grows

I’ve had the opportunity to spend some time over the past few months with the San Carlos Children’s Theater. My son was in the middle school production in January of The Music Man, and my daughter is performing in the current production of Sherlock Holmes. (BTW, performances of Sherlock Holmes end this weekend [...]

Report from CSBA Conference

The past few days I attended the annual California School Boards Association (CSBA) conference, which this year was conveniently held in San Francisco. I was also a speaker on a panel in one session regarding “engagement your community in your budget process.” I find the conference very valuable as it’s a chance to [...]

Goals, 4th Graders, and Measure D

Those topics aren’t necessarily related except for the fact that they were the key topics discussed at last night’s board meeting, which was reasonably well attended particularly given it conflicted with Game 2 of the World Series.

Board Goals – although there will still be some wordsmithing on the final presentation, the Board essentially agreed to [...]

The Ghost of Lehman

Twenty one years ago I actually worked for Lehman Brothers. It’s one of those things that I tend not to highlight on the resume anymore (although, as I like to joke to my friends, “it was all downhill for them after I left”). Lehman now has a different connection for me as it [...]

A Record Not To Be Proud Of

Last Friday marked a milestone as Sacramento officially now has the longest stalemate in California state budget history. And despite the requirement to complete its budget by June 30th (just like we have to do at the local level), each year the state operates under this big unknown, and unfortunately we feel the consequence [...]

Welcome Back to School

This week students returned to school in the San Carlos School District. It was great to see all of the eager faces running around campus and to meet some of the new parents. I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer!

Despite the terrible financial crisis we have endured courtesy of the state of California, [...]

Furlough the Furloughs

One of the stranger concepts that I have been exposed to since taking public office is the notion of the “furlough” day. This essentially means that public agencies tell their employees not to come into work a certain number of days so that they can reduce their pay proportionally. Often such terms need [...]
